Background: After eating dinner with a friend, he offered me this cigar. He acquired this cigar on the island of ST. Maarten while on a cruise. The cigar was hand rolled right before him. He had multiple in different shapes and sizes. All sported the same shiny band. Thus far most reliable source is the Company's facebook website.
Quick Note: Although i did not take my usual notes on this cigar, I still felt the need to write a review. However, this time I will just be giving an overall quick assessment of what I can recall from the smoke.
Final Thoughts: My first thought was that this cigar was very oily. Moreover the amount of veins on the cigar were hard to ignore and ruined it aesthetic appeal. The cigar had some soft spots but not to many and not enough to ruin the integrity of the cigars construction. When I first lit the cigar I noticed very earthy flavors. However, it did give off a scent that was hard to place and not all that pleasant. As the smoke progressed I did, however, notice some cedar notes and very small hints of coffee. As the smoke pushed on, the flavors did not change or enhance. In all honesty, this cigar struck me as a bland one trick pony. When I reached the end of my smoke began to get bombarded with some peppery notes. Although not pleasant, I welcomed a change in the pallet for once in the smoke. Shortly after I put the cigar out.
One of the largest issues I had with this cigar is that I was unable to keep the cigar lit. No less then 7 occasions I found myself tirelessly trying to re-light the cigar. This made the whole experience last over two hours. Two hours which were not the most pleasant from a smoking point of view. Another down fall was the very uneven burn of the cigar. At times it seemed as if only half of it was burning. On the bright side, this cigar did have very impressive smoke billowing out of both ends; that is when it would stay lit.
Overall this cigar was below average. The flavors were undeveloped and very bland. The burn was erratic and the smell was rather unpleasant at times. I give this cigar a 3/10. Maybe after a year or two in the humidor it might have a better showing.
I find your assessment very different from mine. This is one of the best cigars I have ever smoked. To this time I have smoked about forty and and am thankful I have found a way to acquire without going to St. Maarten to acquire. Just another's opinion. jm
ReplyDeleteSir,
DeleteI appreciate your comments. This motivates me to give this cigar another go. I must admit there was something weird about the particular cigar I smoked, even my wife commented on it having a fishy smell before I lit it up. I will keep comment in mind and I thank you for leaving feedback.
Can you buy them online? I got one when I visited but have not tried it yet. Wondering if you can order online.

ReplyDeleteOkay, sorry about my previous attempts to post here. At first I didn't understand that review. I had one of his cigars and it was fine. Different, but fine. Then I tried a second one a few days later. It looks like he might have a quality control problem. The second cigar also tasted fine. But it took a lot of work to get any taste out of it. It didn't burn at all evenly and it was a major job getting it to burn. (However, the second one had been in the humidor longer than the first one. I'm wondering if his tobacco absorbs moisture better than usual, i.e., too well.) I'll eventually try a third one...
ReplyDeleteOkay, after having four of them now, I may have noticed a correlation. The darker wrapped ones (Maduro?) seem to burn fine. The lighter wrapped ones (Connecticut?) don't. However, I've now had two of his torpedos and both were fine. I'd buy those again, but next time I'm there, I think I'll go farther into Phillipsburg to look for a real cigar shop instead of taking advantage of the convenient shop near the cruise ship.
DeleteHad one of these cigars (maduro) and was pretty impressed. The wrappers are not the most appealing and by looks alone made me hesitant. I guess as the old saying goes "don't judge a book by its cover." The cigar was a flavor/smoke bomb. Pairs great with a dark roast coffee. I would give this cigar a 7/10. If it wasn't for the wrapper it would easily be an 8/10. Reminds me slightly of a cuban I had in Jamaica.
